Put Experience and Creative Thinking in your Corner.
Matthew Hug is an award-winning criminal appeals lawyer that has earned significant victories throughout the appellate courts in the State of New York. He has reversed convictions for murder, manslaughter in the second degree, aggravated vehicular manslaughter, assault in the first degree, assault in the second degree, robbery in the first degree, rape in the first degree, burglary in the second degree, predatory sex offense, among a great many others.
Matthew Hug has been on the cutting-edge of novel and law-changing legal concepts. He won a major victory for privacy rights before the New York Court of Appeals, which now requires police to obtain a warrant before they may attach GPS devices to motor vehicles in order to track movement of citizens. People v. Weaver, 12 N.Y.3d 433 (2009). Matthew Hug’s victory was later cited favorably by the United States Supreme Court. United States v. Jones, 565 U.S. 400 (2012).
Currently, Matthew Hug has arguments pending that stand to change the law in significant ways. In one case, the issue is whether artificial intelligence and computer programs should be permitted to interpret DNA evidence instead of human analysts. And, in another, the issue raised is whether prescription drugs can cause an otherwise non-violent person to descend into temporary insanity. Both of these cases stand to deliver significant changes in the law.
If you or a loved one has been wrongfully convicted, you must retain an attorney with a proven track record of success. This success comes from extreme attention to detail and a broad knowledge of the law. There is no doubt, that if there is an error in your case, Matthew Hug will find it and convincingly demonstrate it to the appeals court. Your first appeal is your last best chance of erasing your conviction and sentence, and you should not trust that case to an attorney that lacks the experience and expertise possessed by Matthew Hug.
How We Can Help You
The criminal appeals process often seems complex and not worth the trouble for many individuals found guilty of criminal offenses. However, criminal and federal appeals are the one way to maintain your innocence.
The appellate process requires a thorough understanding of appeals law, including the deadlines for presenting a Notice of Appeals, and experience in arguing your case before the appellate judges. Not every criminal defense lawyer can be an appellate lawyer. However, Matthew Hug is experienced in both the trial setting and the appellate setting and has successfully argued four cases before the New York Court of Appeal and overturned four homicide convictions.
“It isn’t that I have a magic formula, I just work hard”

If you have been arrested on suspicion of a criminal offense, you are no doubt worried about the repercussions a criminal conviction will have on your record. The initial stages of criminal proceedings are often worrisome enough and typically involve several hours or days spent in jail awaiting for the initial court appearance, followed by the bond or bail release.
This quickly sets in to motion all further processes in your criminal case. However, it is important to keep in mind through each stage that an arrest does not equal a conviction. You always have the opportunity to keep a conviction off your record if you contact an experienced Albany criminal defense attorney.
We believe that each client is “innocent until proven guilty” and we will work tirelessly to make a jury understand this fact.
Matthew Hug understands that each personal injury case is unique and involves a distinct set of facts. Many of these cases are often traumatic due to the severity of injuries involved, and Matthew Hug will work tirelessly to ensure that you and your loved ones receive the compensation you deserve.
What is personal injury law?
Car, truck, DUI, and motorcycle accidents are unfortunately far too common in the Albany, New York area and often result in severe, life-threatening injuries. Personal injury cases help in curbing the number of reckless drivers on the road and making drivers accountable for their actions. Premises liability cases serve the same purpose as far as property owners are concerned. You should not have to pay for any medical expenses incurred as the result of someone else’s negligent behavior.
Commercial litigation is often a separate ballgame from traditional business transactional work and criminal litigation. Commercial litigation in New York must follow different procedures than criminal trials and requires an excellent understanding of litigation techniques. Not every lawyer is a litigator and it is important that you contact an attorney who is well experienced in a courtroom.
Commercial litigation often includes many business transactions which must be taken to court. This is vastly different from criminal and even ordinary civil trials (such as personal injury cases), and instead requires a deep understanding of business transactions and contract law.
